For the past 10 years, Madden has contributed monetarily to the Tapemark, citing the tournament’s mission as his reason for support. “Really it just comes down to the cause they are supporting,” says Madden. “Helping people with disabilities has been a huge part of my life and I want to continue to support other organizations who do the same.”

In 1976, Madden and his wife founded Dungarvin, a national organization of privately owned companies that are dedicated to providing high quality, community-based supports to people with developmental disabilities. So it is no wonder the Tapemark’s cause is close to his heart.

This year, Madded purchased 60 raffle tickets at $50 each for the Tapemark’s “One in Five Raffle.” Only 500 tickets are sold for this raffle, with 100 prizes awarded. But for Madden, it’s not about the prizes.

“The Tapemark is just a great, stand-up organization, and I’m proud to support it in any way I can.”

The playoff elimination began on the par 4 first hole. Adam Guili, from Edinburgh U.S.A. saved par on the first, while the other three players made bogey, ensuring Guili a spot in the Tapemark field. On the 2^nd hole, Aaron McClay of Sundance, made par while Scott McDonald (Windsong Farms) and Larry Norland (Green Haven) made bogey, giving McClay the 2^nd available spot with Norland and McDonald fighting for the final opening.

On the third hole, Norland missed on a long birdie chance leaving open the door for McDonald who would make his birdie attempt moving him into the final spot for the 2010 Tapemark Charity Pro Am. Larry Norland will remain first alternate in the field.

Adam Guili Secures Spot in Tapemark Field

My favorite memories of this tournament really have nothing to do with the actual game of golf.  At the first Tapemark in 1972, my role involved running errands, recording scorecards and making homemade signs for the hot dog stands. Throughout the next three decades, I worked closely with my dad (Pat Cody) and began to assume more and more of the responsibilities for the golf event.

I was fortunate indeed to have this unique type of relationship with my father. Most kids experience a “take your son to work” day, but I was able to do this with my dad for six weeks every summer. Working with him daily on the event’s myriad of details gave me a first-hand look at how he operated with people… and how he always kept the tournament’s objectives in the forefront.

In the mid-nineties, as my father’s health failed, the next generation stepped up to help this worthy cause. My sons, Dillon (now 28), Shane (26) and Brendan (22), became more and more actively involved with the tournament operations. (Brendan has since become a member of the PGA and is now an assistant pro at Southview Country Club, the tournament site.) Over this time many Cody family traditions have developed, including the 5:00 a.m. wake-up calls, the Saturday night pairings… and the annual Friday afternoon White Castles at the scoreboard.

My mother Gert, my brothers and sister, the rest of the Cody nephews and nieces have all been part of this event. It has been wonderful to be associated with Tapemark and the Klas family for all these years. The tournament has not only benefited the deserving recipients of this charity… it has been a blessing for our family as well.

It was a beatiful late summer evening as we headed over to the 10th hole to begin the playoff. The five players represented a wonderful cross-section of Tapemark veterans and first-timers; Don Berry, seeking his 6th title…Mike Barge, a 2-time champion, and then 3 new competitors, Chris Bailey, Chris Sauer, and Chris Winkel. With five great players, I figured our playoff might go on for quite some time, and that we would have drama unlike any I had seen during my time at Tapemark.

On the par-3 10th hole, the first playoff hole, three of the five drives landed on the green, with Winkel’s ending up off the fringe on the back of the green. At that point, a birdie putt from Berry, Bailey, or Sauer seemed like a sure winner. But Winkel, the Iowa Section Player of the Year, rolled a 45 foot chip off the back of the green into the cup, and when Sauer’s putt for birdie rimmed out, Winkel had won the Tapemark Championship in his initial year in the Tournament.

The biggest playoff in Tapemark history was arguably the shortest as well!
